Essex Record Office
The Essex Record Office searchroom at Chelmsford is amongst the most advanced and well equipped in the country, and the county’s archive holdings are extremely substantial, due in part to its excellent record over many years of identifying and centralising parish register collections from around the county, and in some part to its proximity to London and the consequential size of population of those parishes bordering the capital.

If your individual or family was resident in Essex, at whichever period, then the Essex Record Office will almost certainly require an eventual visit, and in fact would be your prime research source once the period prior to 1837 (i.e. before civil registration of births, deaths & marriages) is reached.
